Students, you have shown just how very smart you are in the classroom all the way from grade school on through high school.  Congratulations for your accomplishments.  Now that you are in college and perhaps living in a dorm room on campus or sharing an off-campus apartment with friends, and even if you are still living at home, you are finally exposed to the realities of real life.  You are also probably learning that being and acting smart can be very useful when applied to other aspects of life, such as those that most likely have nothing to do with your classrooms.  I would hope that your mom and dad continue to be supportive of you and your efforts but they are no longer holding onto your little hand and guiding you through every hurdle.  And one of the biggest hurdles for college students is money or rather the lack of it.

Oh, yes!  Money is a very big issue with the great majority of college students.  I can so sympathize that I have come to help by showing you how to use those smarts that we talked about earlier and apply them to shopping for your college textbooks.  If you learn to be a smart shopper you will discover that you can save yourself hundreds of dollar each semester on textbooks alone.

The following are money-saving ideas which you will find most helpful when it comes to buying the textbooks that are required for your next semester’s classes:

Plan Early For The Best Available Deals

  • Plan out your next semester courses and commit to your plan as early as you possibly can.
  • Register for your planned out courses at the earliest date your college will allow.
  • Get a list of the required textbooks for each one of your courses the moment it is available.
  • Start shopping immediately.

Research the details of every textbook you will need for each of your classes by acquiring the following information

  • Name of the class and the name of the professor who will be teaching it.  This information may not always be necessary when shopping for your textbooks but you might as well have it.
  • The title, the volume and the edition of the textbook.
  • The full name of the textbook’s author.
  • The textbook’s International Standard Book Number (ISBN) which, by the way, is found on or near the barcode on its back cover.
  • The textbook’s suggested retail price.  Hopefully you will never have to pay that, but it will be useful information in your comparison shopping.

Compare used college textbooks and buy cheaply.  Now that you know how much each of your college textbooks will cost you if you buy it new, look for them used:

  • Browse through the many online bookstores that sell used college textbooks and compare their prices and the shipping fees.
  • If you know other students who are selling old textbooks and they happen to be the ones you need, compare their asking price to those you have seen online.  Remember that they will not be charging you for shipping.

Chances are that you will never look at your textbooks after you had completed the class for which they were used.  So why not sell them to offset some of the expenses of buying other ones?
