Used Pharmacology Textbooks

Used Pharmacology Textbooks – Although the two are somewhat related and there seems to be a similarity of spelling which all too often leads to confusion, pharmacology and pharmacy are not one and the same.  Pharmacy is the name given to that branch of the medical profession which deals with compounding and dispensing medications as well as providing clinical services that include advice and consultation about the prescribed or over-the-counter medications, and reviewing the safety and the effectiveness of doctor prescribed medications.

On the other hand, pharmacology, which originated from the Greek word “pharmakon” meaning “drug,” is the study of drugs, medications or chemicals and the body’s response to them; the origins and derivations of the drugs, medications or chemicals and most particularly their characteristics, their properties, their interface with one another and the living organism (the body).  Pharmacology also deals with the toxicity versus the therapeutic and medicinal effects of drugs, medications or chemicals on living organisms, whether they are human bodies or the bodies of other biological species.

In spite of the fact that clinical pharmacology dates back to the Middle Ages (roughly the 5th through the 16th century) and its focus on natural materials extracted primarily from plants of the region, its true and significant advancements did not occur until the great revival of the biomedical fields in the 19th century and the application of findings through scientific research and experimentation.  Today’s pharmacology is a perpetually growing and continually expanding field of chemical science which has been subdivided into the following areas of instruction:

* Clinical Pharmacology is the medical field which is concerned with the effects and consequences of medications on the human body.
* Neuro and Psychopharmacology is the medical field which deals with the effects and consequences of medications on human behavior and on the functions of the nervous systems, neurologically as well as psychologically.
* Pharmacogenetics is that branch of the medical field that focuses on genetic differences and their varied reactions to medications.
* Pharmacogenomics relates the technology of genomics (chromosomes) to existing medications and to the newly developed ones.
* Pharmacoepidemiology studies and observes the effects of medications on large human populations.
* Toxicology is the study and research of the damaging consequences of medications.
* Theoretical Pharmacology is purely the study of pharmacological theories, concepts and principles.
* Posology is the study which determines how to designate dosage of medications.
* Pharmacognosy is the study of extracting medicines solely from plant organisms.

Pharmacology is a discipline that is offered in most medical schools and if that is the field you wish to enter, allow me to show you a way to cut some of the cost on the many textbooks which will be required.  First of all, be assured that used pharmacology textbooks will be every bit as useful to your studies as the new ones with one major difference, you will be saving yourself a bundle of money.  The best way to acquire used pharmacology textbooks is by being quick about getting their names and then by:

* Looking for students on campus who wish to sell the textbooks you need and those which they no longer have a use for.
* Another good source is the Internet which features countless online textbook sellers who offer their used textbooks at discounts of up to 75% or more.  Take a look at those that I listed below and then feel free to expand your search for others –

Used Engineering Textbooks

Buying And Selling Used Engineering Textbooks – Engineering is the branch of learning and the line of work that makes use of the technical and scientific know-how to combine with the laws of nature and the availability of raw materials and substances to draw up plans for the creation of objects, buildings and structures, machinery and gadgets, implements and devices as well as techniques and procedures that derive at the desired goals with safety and meet precise conditions and predetermined standards.

The American Engineers’ Council for Professional Development (ECPD), the accrediting entity for college and university engineering programs and their many diverse variables, branches and the more specialized sub-branches, has described engineering in the following statement:  “The creative application of scientific principles to design or develop structures, machines, apparatus, or manufacturing processes, or works utilizing them singly or in combination; or to construct or operate the same with full cognizance of their design; or to forecast their behavior under specific operating conditions; all as respects an intended function, economics of operation and safety to life and property.”

Although the word “engineering” has been coined as recently as 1325 and it derived from the Latin word “ingenium” (c. 1250) which means “inherent excellence as related to mental capability and brilliant inventiveness,” engineering existed in much more ancient times when the pulley, the lever and the wheel were invented.

Likewise, superb engineering came into play when ancient cultures conceived, constructed, erected and built amazing structures of antiquity.  The following are but a few examples out of the dozens others which bear witness to the resourcefulness and virtuosity of the earliest engineering achievements:

  • The Aqueducts, the Via Appia and the Colosseum in Rome.
  • The Parthenon and the Acropolis in Greece.
  • The Hanging Gardens of Babylon.
  • The Pharos of Alexandria and the Pyramids in Egypt.
  • The Great Wall of China and the Forbidden City.
  • Petra in Jordan.
  • The Teotihuacán and the cities and pyramids of the Mayan, Inca and Aztec Empires.

The modern day field of engineering is a broad one, but it has been divided into the following main branches:

  • Aerospace Engineering is the design of aircrafts, spacecrafts and such related topics.
  • Chemical Engineering is the transformation of raw materials into usable products and goods.
  • Mechanical Engineering is the design of physical or mechanical systems, such as engines, power trains, kinematic chains and vibration isolation equipment.
  • Electrical Engineering is the creation of electrical systems, such as transformers, as well as electronic appliances.
  • Civil Engineering is the drafting and building of infrastructures, bridges and buildings for public and private use.

If you are up to the task of joining the scores of accomplished engineers through the ages, you have my highest regards and admiration as well as my sincerest wishes for your success.  However, my kudos is not enough.  You will have to go through years of formal education and you will need to invest a whole lot of time and brain power on your studies and a substantial amount of money on tuition and textbooks, among other necessities.

I do not have the wherewithal to advise you on the study aspect of this equation nor do I know how to counsel you on the tuition and other necessities but I am certain that the school of your choice will happily avail all the resources you will need.  What I can and will do is recommend that you purchase your textbooks used and save a goodly amount of money.

The Internet is snowed under with online bookstores but the following are my favorites and they sell all the used engineering textbooks you will need to complete your engineering programs and make your mark in the real world:

Current Books For Sale

Students, you have shown just how very smart you are in the classroom all the way from grade school on through high school.  Congratulations for your accomplishments.  Now that you are in college and perhaps living in a dorm room on campus or sharing an off-campus apartment with friends, and even if you are still living at home, you are finally exposed to the realities of real life.  You are also probably learning that being and acting smart can be very useful when applied to other aspects of life, such as those that most likely have nothing to do with your classrooms.  I would hope that your mom and dad continue to be supportive of you and your efforts but they are no longer holding onto your little hand and guiding you through every hurdle.  And one of the biggest hurdles for college students is money or rather the lack of it.

Oh, yes!  Money is a very big issue with the great majority of college students.  I can so sympathize that I have come to help by showing you how to use those smarts that we talked about earlier and apply them to shopping for your college textbooks.  If you learn to be a smart shopper you will discover that you can save yourself hundreds of dollar each semester on textbooks alone.

The following are money-saving ideas which you will find most helpful when it comes to buying the textbooks that are required for your next semester’s classes:

Plan Early For The Best Available Deals

  • Plan out your next semester courses and commit to your plan as early as you possibly can.
  • Register for your planned out courses at the earliest date your college will allow.
  • Get a list of the required textbooks for each one of your courses the moment it is available.
  • Start shopping immediately.

Research the details of every textbook you will need for each of your classes by acquiring the following information

  • Name of the class and the name of the professor who will be teaching it.  This information may not always be necessary when shopping for your textbooks but you might as well have it.
  • The title, the volume and the edition of the textbook.
  • The full name of the textbook’s author.
  • The textbook’s International Standard Book Number (ISBN) which, by the way, is found on or near the barcode on its back cover.
  • The textbook’s suggested retail price.  Hopefully you will never have to pay that, but it will be useful information in your comparison shopping.

Compare used college textbooks and buy cheaply.  Now that you know how much each of your college textbooks will cost you if you buy it new, look for them used:

  • Browse through the many online bookstores that sell used college textbooks and compare their prices and the shipping fees.
  • If you know other students who are selling old textbooks and they happen to be the ones you need, compare their asking price to those you have seen online.  Remember that they will not be charging you for shipping.

Chances are that you will never look at your textbooks after you had completed the class for which they were used.  So why not sell them to offset some of the expenses of buying other ones?

Komm Mit Textbook Used

Komm Mit Textbook Used – This is a call to all those who are interested in linguistics and most particularly to anyone who wants to learn a new foreign language and to do it thoroughly from “A” to “Z” and with all its “I”s dotted and its “T”s crossed.  And why might you be interested in linguistics or want to learn a foreign language?  Well, there are countless very compelling reasons but I will discuss only a handful of the following:

  • Linguistics is the study of the characteristics, arrangement and adaptation of language which includes its sounds (phonetics), the rules of its pronunciation (phonology), the patterns of its word formation (morphology), its grammatical rules (syntax), the meaning of its words (semantics), its role in society (sociolinguistics) and its practical usage (pragmatics).  In other words and in shorter terms, linguistics will bring you much closer to a language — any language, including your own.
  • Studying a foreign language, be it your second or your third or you umpteenth, opens more doors of communication with other peoples of different cultures, it makes you a much more rounded and by far more interesting and impressive person.  In addition, studying a foreign language exercises your mind and brainpower so that it improves your ability to learn anything and everything else as well.

But perhaps the most important argument for learning a new foreign language is the following — since your own mother tongue, whatever it may be, has many foreign derivatives from various origins, learning a foreign language will help you know your own language so much better that you will find yourself understanding and using the same multi-syllable words used by the more intellectual and better educated factions among us.

If I have succeeded in convincing you about the importance and benefits of learning a new foreign language, I would also like to persuade you to consider German as the next foreign language for you to study.  Why German?  Because German …

… is the most widely used language in all of Europe.
… is the mother tongue of Germany which has a strong economy, it is one of the biggest exporting nations in the world, it has a very prominent presence on the World Wide Web and the Internet and you might someday want to be involved in commerce with them.

… was spoken by one of the largest ancestral groups in the United States.
… is the language which occupies over 10% of the book publishing world.
… is not a very difficult language to learn.

The “Komm Mit” textbook series leads students from the most elementary level to upper levels with comprehensive diligence yet with fun cartoonlike illustrations and audio tapes that were obviously well thought out with good lesson structures in mind.

Enjoy your German lessons with “Komm Mit” textbooks and Herzlichen Glückwunsch!

Used 5th Grade Math Textbooks

Used 5th Grade Math Textbooks – This narrative is intended for all parents or guardians of students who are in the 4th grade and on their successful way into the 5th, for all those who are in charge of students who are currently in the 5th grade or, believe it or not, for anyone else who may be interested in topics relating to 5th grade math.

At the 5th grade level, particularly in math, most students should have ripened and matured enough to handle the more complex arithmetic operations of adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing whole numbers (i.e. 1, 2, 3, …, 38, … 96, and so no), fractions (i.e. 1/2, 3/8, 12/16, …), decimals (i.e. 0.7, 1.9, 26.3, etc.), percentages (6%, 21%, 82.71%, …) as well as working with positive and negative number (-13+5, -99+17, and so forth).  In addition (no pun intended), 5th grade math students learn about the common measuring units (inches, feet, yards, acres, …) and know how to apply them for determining length and area, they are taught formulas to calculate volume of basic geometric figures (squares, rectangles, triangles, circles, …), they learn how to use protractors and compasses, how to measure angles, and they use grids, tables, graphs and charts for the purpose of recording and then analyzing data.  The numbers 5th graders use in their math classes are as small as one thousandths and as large as millions, they will grasp the concept of number relativity, estimating, round up or down, determining prime factors, working with mixed numbers and symbols, solving word problems and a whole lot more.

As you can see, 5th grade math can be quite a challenge and your student needs all the help and encouragement you can offer as well as the proper tools.  One of the most essential of such tools is a textbook which is mandatory, and for good reason, in most classrooms.  The bad news is that 5th grade math textbooks tend to be pricey.  The good news, however, is that there are ways of significantly cutting down on their cost.  You could check them out at the library, you may be able to find the designated 5th grade math textbook in a PDF format for printing it out on your own or, and this in my opinion is the best solution, buy them used or if you prefer, buy them pre-owned.

Most or at least many bookstores around town carry used textbooks and I have no doubt that their stock would include the 5th grade math textbook your child needs.  You will be pleasantly surprised at the deep discounts they offer.  But for even greater savings you should go to the countless online used textbook sellers as their discounts range from 60 to 90% off the marked retail price.  I could not even begin to imagine why you would not decide on this optimal money saving option.  To get you started on the road to saving your money on the used 5th grade math textbook that will, in turn, get your child started on the road to academic success, I listed a few websites below:

Japanese Textbooks Used In Japanese Schools

Japanese Textbooks Used In Japanese Schools – Most of us believe that historic accounts are irrefutably factual and that they must be accurately conveyed or they would be called fiction not history.  As we read about events from the past, we trust that what the history books tell us is, in fact, what happened, how it happened and when it happened.  Unfortunately though, there are nations in certain parts of plant earth which are so embarrassed or afraid for the bona fide truth to be revealed that they distort the reality as they fabricate incidents, camouflage actuality, whitewash evil doing — they, in fact, reinvent or rewrite history.

Japan is one such nation.  Orchestrated and propagated by the Japanese government, the Japanese history textbooks used in Japanese schools at their primary as well as their secondary level education (elementary school, junior high school and high school) have been twisted and warped in an attempt to cover up and obscure the offensive behavior of Imperial Japan during World War II (WWII).  In addition, the constitutionality or legality of the Japanese government which is sanctioning the misrepresentation of true history in the Japanese textbooks has been questioned by Japanese and international communities for many years now, especially those which suffered acts of violence at the hands of Japanese war criminals and imperialists during the earlier half of the twentieth century.

On the one hand, proponents and defenders of Japanese textbooks used in Japanese schools are quick to point out that every book that is proposed as a prospective textbook to be used in Japanese schools must pass a series of rigorous assessments and evaluations before it is finally approved.  Advocates of the existing system claim that all potential textbooks for the Japanese schools are authored by private entities and their drafts are first submitted to the Authorization and Research Council which is made up of university professors, high school and junior high school teachers, and it is an official ruling and authoritative body of the Japanese Ministry of Education.  This scholarly council then scrutinizes the draft of each presented textbook against the educational curriculum guidelines that had been issued by the Japanese Ministry of Education and inspects its contents for objectivity, for impartiality and for errors and inaccuracies.

Drafts that have been found to hold data that is not in agreement with the principles upheld by the Japanese Ministry of Education will be returned for correction or reconsideration.  Revised drafts are resubmitted to the Authorization and Research Council for further inspection.  Once a textbook is approved, it is added to a list of authorized textbooks.  Local Boards of Education have the final say about which sanctioned textbooks to use in the schools under their control.  This entire process of official textbook endorsement for Japanese schools takes place every four years.

Critics and opponents, on the other hand, maintain that the Japanese Ministry of Education uses the textbook authorization system to extract historical facts which shed unfavorable light on Japan’s past.  These critics most avidly point to the fact that Japanese history books make no mention of the Nanjing Massacre and similar war crimes that were committed by the Japanese military before and during World War II.

So, can we continue to trust that history textbooks accurately depict events which happened in our past and that none of the good nor the bad nor the ugly has been censored out?  I wonder!

Used Teacher Textbooks

Used Teacher Textbooks – Today’s textbooks are more expensive than they have ever been in the past, and that is an indisputable fact.  However, the reason for the high cost of textbooks is not easily determined or pinned down.  In my hunt for justifications to this costly dilemma, I came across the following theories:

* One theory points an accusing finger at the vibrant colors in today’s textbooks which push the cost up.  This theory explains that multi-color printing makes the production of textbooks much more expensive, which ultimately translates in higher price tags.  That does not ring true to me because I have seen textbooks which have no colors, other than the white of the paper they are printed on and the black of their ink, are even pricier than those which display a rainbow of colors.

* Other theories say that the global and national inflation is generally to blame but that makes little sense in light of the fact that the continually rising costs of textbooks are miles ahead of the actual inflation.  If anything, perhaps it’s the high cost of the textbooks that pulls the inflation right along with it but maybe not.

* An alternate theory implications the publishers of these textbooks and claims that they have become greedy and seek the outrageously profits with no regard for impoverished students.  These same accusatory theories lament the time when publishers of scholarly books settled for more modest proceeds in order to help students meet their goals more easily, whereas today’s publishers view such valuable academic tomes no differently than any other item on a retailer’s shelf.

* Other allegations against publishers call attention to the fact that the small, independent publishers are rapidly disappearing off the market as they are being gobbled up by the large corporation.  This results in the elimination of competition which makes it easier to revise prices upwards without being challenged.  That, unfortunately, is the mark of our times — the big cats eat the smaller ones.

* An additional conjecture highlights the reality that textbooks get revised all too frequently, some as often as every two or three years.  They then allege that this is what drives the price of textbooks to such extreme heights.  Hmm, that is a possibility.

* Finally, I have heard that some hold the push to buy and sell used textbooks responsible for the high cost of new textbooks.  And this is how they paint the picture:  Every new textbook that is sold brings a percentage of profit into the publishing house and royalties to its author.  However, when textbooks are resold as used, the publishing house and the author are not making the money they would have made otherwise.  So, the price of new textbooks is raised to compensate for such losses.

Now that you’ve heard the alleged reasons for the high cost of today’s textbooks, feel free to draw your own conclusions.  But if you are a struggling student, give yourself and your finances a break and do not hesitate to purchase used philosophy textbooks, used English literature textbooks, used teacher textbooks or any other textbooks you may need and the best place to start is by browsing the Internet for online used textbooks retailers.

Used Spanish Text Books

Used Spanish Text Books – The concept of a foreign language can be defined on several levels:

* First of all, a foreign language is a language that is not used by certain people living in a specific region of the world.  A good example is the Portuguese language to most people living in Thailand who perceive it as a foreign language.

* Secondly, a foreign language is a language that is strange and unfamiliar to a particular individual living in the region where the said language is spoken regularly by the local inhabitants.  For instance, the French language is used by most people living in Paris but it is a foreign language to a newly settled immigrant from a different country such as Poland or Russia or Canada.

* Thirdly, a foreign language is the language that is not used by the majority of the population in a said region although it may be the mother tongue of a particular individual who was born and raised there.  This scenario can be clearly demonstrated as follows – a child who was born and raised in Turkey learned English from his British mother and Farsi from his Iranian father.  Both, English and Farsi are considered that child’s mother tongues because he learned them from birth yet they are also foreign languages in Turkey and to most of its citizens.

Beginning with primary schools and continuing through secondary and higher education, most schools in the developed as well as the developing nations teach their students at least one foreign language.  The choice of which foreign language is to be taught depends on geographic proximity to a neighboring nation whose language is foreign, on local or national political persuasions and sympathies, on their internal demographics, on their global commerce and so on.  In a report issued in 1995, the European Commission called attention to the importance of teaching young pupils at least two foreign languages and the Lisbon Summit of 2000 named the study of foreign languages as one of the five most critical skills.

Numerous studies conducted primarily in the United Kingdom and the United States show that mastering a second language is beneficial on a variety of levels as it increases earning capability in the workforce while opening up more opportunities and a wider range of career paths; it broadens interpersonal communications with many more people around the world; it physically changes the brain’s grey matter by making it denser to increase its processing capability for improved thinking, strategizing and solving mathematical problems as well as expanding learning power and creativity.  There is one critical point that is evident in the results of all these studies and that is the fact that the most pronounced improvements are evident in those who begin studying a foreign language in their early years.  However, those who take up a foreign language later in life still reap tremendous benefits.

If Spanish is the foreign language of your choice, it makes little difference whether you are a preteen or a mature adult as you will still need to use Spanish textbooks.  And if you want to save yourself some money in the process of acquiring them, be sure that you are shopping around for used Spanish textbooks.  To save you some time, start out by perusing the following online textbook retailers and be pleasantly surprised at the discounts you will find on the used Spanish textbooks you are searching for:

  • Fundamentals of Physics (Halliday, Resnick & Walker, Wiley) at 45 percent.

So many different textbooks holding such a wealth of information for high school level physics, but what exactly is physics?  Physics derives from the Greek word “physis” which means “nature” and it literally means “natural science.”  Physics observes, studies and comes to conclusions regarding energy, force, space, time and everything that is associated with these such as mass, charge, matter and motion.  In much broader terms and in a simplified language, physics is the study of all that is part of nature.  Its main focus is the quest to comprehend the world and the universe; their behavior and mode of reaction to the existing forces.  Universe in this context is defined as everything that has a physical existence: the totality of space and time, all matter in all its forms, energy, momentum and the physical principles which reign over them.

If astronomy is to be included within its realm, physics is then the oldest academic subject of study as it has, for the past two thousand years, been thought of as one and the same discipline as philosophy, chemistry and some parts of mathematics and biology.  However, during the Scientific Revolution of the sixteenth century it acquired its own stance though it had continuously remained cooperative with the other sciences.  The tremendous importance attributed to physics is due to the fact that its progress, more than any other branch of science, inevitably leads to new technologies as well as greatly impacting the other sciences, mathematics as well as philosophy.

Physics is the science of our existence and all that surrounds us and to better understand what it is all about; great textbooks are available starting at high school levels.  As is true of all science textbooks, high school level physics textbooks are very expensive unless acquired used.  There are countless websites which sell used high school physics textbooks but you might want to start your search at the following online bookstores:

Used Glencoe Algebra Textbooks & Math Textbook

Used Glencoe Algebra Textbooks – Algebra is just one out of many divisions of mathematics and its main focus is on structures, relations and quantities.  In close concert with geometry, math analysis, combinatorics and the numeric theories; algebra is one of the most important and central divisions of mathematics as it is the basis for most other divisions or branches of mathematics beyond arithmetic and therefore also laying the foundation for all sciences.  At its simplest and introductory levels, Elementary Algebra is usually part of the general curriculum at junior high schools and middle school as it covers the effects of adding and multiplying numbers, the notion of variables, the meaning of polynomials, factorization and roots.

Algebra, however, does not stop with elementary algebra because it expands to far higher levels with more intricacies and greater degrees of difficulty as it covers symbols, complex variables, set elements, as well as structures such as groups, rings and fields.  Hence, algebra as an entire division of mathematics is further subdivided into the following universally recognized categories:

  • Elementary algebra is the study as discussed above.
  • Intermediate algebra deals with the properties of procedures on the real number system as it uses symbols standing for constants and variables and the dictates administering algebraic expressions and mathematical equations.
  • Abstract algebra, occasionally referred to as modern algebra, clearly defines and examines algebraic structures such as groups, rings, and fields.
  • Linear algebra studies the precise properties of vector spaces and pattern.
  • Universal algebra analyzes the properties of all algebraic structures.
  • Algebraic number theory is where the properties of numbers are studied by means of algebraic systems.  It is the numeric theory which initiated the original concepts in algebra.
  • Algebraic geometry studies the algebraic facets of geometry.
  • Algebraic combinatorics studies connective questions by utilizing abstract algebraic methods.

To attain the best possible handle on algebraic mathematics it must be approach with optimal teaching techniques and the appropriate learning tools which will, of course, include algebra textbooks.  And the most highly valued algebra textbooks are those which are published by Glencoe (http://www.glencoe.com/) in partnership with McGraw-Hill which is a branch of the McGraw-Hill and the MacMillan/McGraw-Hill (http://catalog.macmillanmh.com/) Companies which, in turn, are the leading publishers of educational and instructional materials for grades six through twelve.

Their edifying publications are widely used in public and private schools as well as in other organizations that teach and develop young minds through printed materials, software and websites.  The Glencoe algebra textbooks are consistently of the highest quality and they assure true effectiveness in any leaning environment.  They can be purchased new and hot off the presses directly through the Glencoe website at http://www.glencoe.com/catalog/index.php/catalog?c=1670&v= where an e-catalog is readily accessible or the MacMillan/McGraw-Hill website and their online catalog at http://catalog.macmillanmh.com/catalog/index.php/program?groupid=173&gradeid=7&v=NL.

Used Dental Textbooks For Sale

Used Dental Textbooks For Sale – So, dentistry is the career path you have decided to walk through and I will agree that it is a fabulous choice.  Dentistry is one of those careers that will never go away because everyone has teeth which all need to be taken care of by good professionals.  And dentistry is probably one of the most dynamic fields in medicine as it is continually expanding, ever evolving and constantly innovating as it branches out onto new and unchartered avenues which lead to ever so many dental specialties.  And one additional aspect of dentistry must have crossed your mind as it is crossing mine at the moment — dentistry tends to be quite profitable.

But before you tally up your financial gains from the very lucrative line of work you picked for yourself, I suggest that you first figure out a way of surviving through the academic rigor of the dental school you so carefully selected.  It will probably not be easy but you have already proven just how brilliant, diligent and persistent you can be, simply by making it to this crossroad at this point in time.

Scholastically speaking you will be just fine.  There is, however, another stumbling block you must learn to leap over and that is the economic drain of a dental school.  The expenses are prohibitive but there are ways of cutting corners and cutting back on many of them but I would like, just now, to focus on one of those — the essential dental textbooks.

Regardless of the dental school you will be attending and no matter which one of the many specialty fields in dentistry you are planning to land in, you will be required to work with textbooks; many of them, I am sure.  As you have already come to realize through your undergraduate college years, textbooks are extremely expensive and the more advance the classes are, the bigger the textbooks are likely to be and, of course, more costly.  However, utilizing some of your ingenuity and quick thinking, you can save hundreds of dollars by purchasing used dental textbooks.

Used dental textbooks are for sale through a variety of outlets but you must act quickly because you will have to complete against other money-conscious dental students:

  • Used dental textbooks are available among your fellow students who want to offset their own expenses by reselling the textbooks they will no longer be in need of.  This should be your first choice.
  • Used dental textbooks are available in the countless online bookstores such as Amazan.com, Half.com and so on and on.  But the best and most comprehensive online source for dental textbooks is America’s Dental Book Store at http://www.americasdentalbookstore.com/.
  • Used dental textbooks are available in bookstores on your own dental school campus as well as in bookstores about town.  This should be used as your last resource but never discount it completely.

The best way to beat the rushing crowds is by planning as far ahead as you possibly can.  Decide which classes you will be taking next semester while you are still working on the current one.  Get a hold of the list of mandatory textbooks for each of those classes and beginning your shopping as soon as the current semester ends.

Used Textbooks Middle School

Used Textbooks Middle School – Two textbooks made their historical mark in American education.  Published between 1688 and 1690, the first historic textbook was “The New England Primer” which was compiled specifically for the children of the American colonialists by Benjamin Harris, an English printer who arrived in Boston, Massachusetts in 1686.  Continually remaining in print into the nineteenth century, “The New England Primer” was intended to teach rudimentary reading to students of all ages.  Its ninety pages included general instruction of the alphabet as well as learning words and their structure of vowels and consonants, the usage of double letters, syllables.  All this teaching was primarily based on religious maxims, Christian catechisms, puritan ideals and such famous verses as the one which appeared in its 1784 edition and had been reiterated by countless children for all those decades:

Now I lay me down to sleep,
I pray thee, Lord, my soul to keep;
If I should die before I wake,
I pray thee, Lord, my soul to take.

The second historic textbook is the “McGuffey Readers” which was written by William Holmes McGuffey and published in 1836 by Truman and Smith, a small publishing house in Cincinnati, Ohio.  Initially, the “McGuffey Readers” were a series of four graded readers targeting primary level students which, in 1840, were subsequently followed by two more readers that were added to the entire series and these were intended for middle school and high school level students.

The lower level series of readers 1 through 4 were made up of a compilation of short stories, poems, essays and speeches:

* Reader #1 taught reading by phonics (the identification of letters and their arrangement into words and their placement within words);
* Reader #2 helped students understand phrases and sentences once they were able to read;
* Reader #3 was equivalent to today’s 5th or 6th grade and it taught vocabulary and the definitions of words;
* Reader #4 taught grammar to higher level primary school students.

The more advanced two readers of the series (Reader #5 and #6) contained passages and quotes from the classical works of acclaimed writers in the English language such as Lord Byron, John Milton and Daniel Webster.

As popular and long lasting as “The New England Primer” had been, the “McGuffey Readers” far surpassed it with nearly 150 million copies having been sold to-date and it is still currently being used in several school around the country.  There are those in the textbook industry who even equate the sales of the “McGuffey Readers” to the sales of the Bible and Webster’s Dictionary

Parents, whether they are the good old “McGuffey Readers” or other more contemporary textbooks which are required in your children’s middle school curricula, save your hard earned money and buy them used from most book stores about town or, for a greater selection and more savings, click your way into the Internet and browse through websites of online used textbook sellers such websites as the following:

Used University Textbooks

Used University Textbooks – Two opposing aspects of my years in college stand out more significantly than any others and those are the good times on the one hand and the hard times on the other.  And, surprisingly enough, both of these disparities really relate to the same issues.  But let me explain myself.

Finally getting out from under my parents’ wings with no restraining apron strings attached, please forgive the silly analogies, accounted for the good times:

I went away to college and entered a realm of good times because my parents could no longer apply curfews, they could no longer asked the questions to which I was too afraid to reply truthfully and too intimidated to lie and they could no longer impose their opinions about the people I party with, the clothes I wear, the hairstyles I espouse, the food I eat, the late nights I keep or the events I attend.

I hated to admit it then, but immerging from under my parents’ rigid supervision and their unrelenting control over my entire life also accounted for the hard times:

I went away to college and entered a realm of hardship because I was always short on money.  Although it was most likely not necessarily so, it seemed at the time that everyone could afford to take their dates out to all the places I could not, everyone could occasionally buy a new outfit or a new pair of shoes but me and all the pockets of my campus mates jingled with coins whereas mine remained perpetually silent.  For me and seemingly only for me; movies were too expensive, theater was too extravagant, discotheques or dance halls were too prohibitive and bars were too excessive.

Oh, yes.  My parents fully paid my tuition.  It was a big expanse for them but because it was completely invisible to me and certainly inaccessible, I am embarrassed to admit that I failed to be grateful back then.  No.  I will not tell you how long ago that was but I will assure you that I am tremendously appreciative of it now.

My parents also gave me money in cash to be spent on “incidentals” such as textbooks and, out of sheer desperation and want; I quickly learned how to stretch each green dollar by buying all my textbooks used from other students who no longer wanted them or from the campus bookstore.  I then greedily spent the savings on all the things which I truly needed: records (they hadn’t invented CDs yet), makeup, magazines, decadent snacks and so on.

Today’s university students can still buy their used textbooks from others on campus or the from the college bookstore but they also have much better options which were not available to me because I was a pre-Internet scholar — they can buy their used university textbooks from online booksellers where the selection is tremendous and, with many of them offering discounts of between 60 and 90 percent off the marked retail prices of the new textbooks, the savings are unsurpassed.

Used Medical Textbooks

Used Medical Textbooks – If you are contemplating going to medical school in order to pursue a career as a general practitioners or as a professional in any one of the dozens of specialties in the far-reaching and ever-growing field of medicine, my hat is off to you in high esteem.  It will not be easy as you will encounter countless challenges on your path to conquering the art and the science of healing in an earnest attempt to restore wellness by utilizing preventive measures as well as treating injuries and disease.

However, the rewards of knowing that you have the power to alleviate pain and suffering as well as save lives will, no doubt, make your hard work all worthwhile.  Rest assured that as you march forward on your warpath against the anguish of illness and the torment of poor health and deformities, you will have no need to face them alone as you will have an entire team of skilled health care professionals such as nurses, nurse practitioners, orderlies,  emergency medical technicians, paramedics, laboratory scientists, pharmacists, physiotherapists, respiratory therapists, speech therapists, occupational therapists, radiographers, dietitians, bioengineers, social workers and many others including practitioners of alternative medicine (massage therapists, herbologists, acupuncturists, chiropractors and practitioners of biofeedback, yoga, acupressure) who will be marching right along with you.

You will be studying a wide range of sciences during your years in medical school and their extent and focus will depend on your specific specialty.  Those sciences are as I have listed them below in alphabetical order:

* Anatomy is the study of the physical structure of organisms, most particularly the human organism.

* Biochemistry is the study of the chemistry which takes place in living organisms as well as the structure and function of the organisms’ chemical elements.

* Biostatistics is the association of statistical findings in biological disciplines.  It is critical for effective planning and accurate analysis of medical research.

* Cytology is the study of individual cells on the microscopic level.

* Embryology is the study of embryos or the beginning stages of organisms.

* Epidemiology is the study of epidemics, endemics and other demographically related diseases.

* Genetics is the study of genes and the role they play in inheritance.

* Histology is the study of the makeup of biological tissues.

* Immunology is the study of the immune system.

* Medical Physics is the study of relating the principles of physics to medicine.

* Microbiology is the study microorganisms such as protozoa, bacteria, fungi and viruses.

* Neuroscience is the study of the nervous system in the human brain and the spinal cord.

* Nutrition Science is the study of the relationship between what is ingested and optimal health.

Where To Buy College Textbooks

Where To Buy College Textbooks – The checklist of college expenses is very long and scary but must be addressed if and when there is intent to enhance one’s future in the business world, in the professional arena, in any of the political fields or in any other discipline which requires higher academic advancement.

Those essentials which must be included in a checklist of college expenses are as follows:

* Educational Expenses.

  • Tuition is usually the largest single expense and its variances depend on the nature of the college (four year vs. two year, private vs. public, state vs. city), its geographic location and whether the student is from the same state or from outside it.
  • Textbooks are a huge expense and they vary depending on the course of study.  For instance, science and mathematics textbooks tend to be the most expensive and some may cost as much as $200 or more.
  • An up-to-date computer and its accessories such as a printer, printing cartridges, printing paper and software are essentials for students of today. Some majors even require very specialized software.
  • Certain programs in some colleges charge extra fees for the use of their labs and special equipment and those fees would be in addition to the tuition fees.
  • Students need a constant supply of provisional items such as pens, pencils, highlighters, paper, notebooks, backpack, organizer, binders, etc., etc., etc.  Of course, some courses such as the fine arts require drawing and painting supplies; performing arts require costumes; engineering require drafting supplies and so on.

* Living Expenses.

  • Students must live somewhere and it tends to be a huge expense which depends on the accommodations and their location (dorm room vs. apartment, on-campus vs. off-campus or in close proximity to the campus or far).
  • Food can vary greatly depending on how it’s arranged, what is consumed and where.
  • Laundry expenses and detergents.
  • Phone expenses whether they be for cellular phones or landlines or both.
  • Connectivity to the Internet which is quite often essential for research.
  • Medical and dental insurance and additional expenses such as co-payments and medications.
  • Car insurance, gas, parking or public transportation.
  • Clothing.
  • Entertainment.

Needless to say, there are ways to save on some of these expenses as students can:

  • Attend public colleges in their own home state and pay lower tuition rates.
  • Share a computer and its expenses with a friend or two and take advantage of the availability of computer labs on campus.
  • Opt for a course of study that does not levy extra fees and be frugal when it comes to the usage of provisional items.
  • Share an off-campus apartment with several roommates or, better yet, live at home with mom and dad.
  • Avoid eating at high end restaurants and do shopping at discount stores.
  • Shop for the best deals on cellular phone services and never go over the allotted minutes, use the free Internet connections and economize on entertainment and transportation expenses.

Save lots of money on textbooks.  How?  By buying them used from fellow students on campus or from the many online bookstores such as:

Used Math Textbooks

Used Math Textbooks – The word “math” is the abbreviated or shortened version of “mathematics” that derived from the Greek word “máth?ma” which means “learning, study, science.”  Mathematics, in its earliest and most elementary forms, dates back to prehistoric people who learned how to count; first physical objects and then the abstracts such as time which included days, seasons and years.

Later on, of course, seconds, minutes and hours were added to mix of counted abstracts.  Arithmetic which is essentially the basics of mathematics followed in a natural progression with addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.  Out of sheer necessity to document that which was counted or arithmetically calculated, some form of a consistent system for recording had to be invented. and many cultures went about it in different ways with their own distinct methods.  For example:  the Incas used tallies or knotted strings called quipu.

The first evidence of written recordings of arithmetical data is attributed to the Egyptians in the Middle Kingdom and that was realized with the discovery of the Rhind Mathematical Papyrus.  The highly evolved civilization of the Indus Valley developed the decimal system which we still use today as well as the metaphorical concept of “zero.”

For the most part, the mathematics of ancient cultures can more or less be divided into the following studies:

* Quantities.  The realization of quantities which was used for taxation and trade purposes, as well as to conceive the relationships between numbers.

* Structure.  Structure was used to measure the physical size (length, height, widths, depth and weight) of tangibles such as land, homes and all kinds of objects.

* Space.  Space was used to measure the distance between tangibles such as the distance from home to church, from town to village and so on.

* Change.  Change was the method by which time was measured between recurring cosmic, natural and personal events such sunrise and sunset, cold season and hot, night and day, full moon and no moon, conception of baby and its birth, birth and death, and so on.

Mathematics, which is continually expanding and extending its scope, is a science in its own rights but it is also an essential tool used in just about all other fields of science.  To quote Benjamin Peirce, a famous American mathematics professor who taught at the Harvard University in the 19th century, “Mathematics is the science that draws necessary conclusions.”  Many other mathematicians claim that mathematics is the science of patterns which are found in the precision of numbers as they relate to space, to other scientific persuasions, to computers, to non-tangible concepts, to logical thinking and to everything else.

We all use mathematics on a daily basis; at home, in the workforce and out in public.  For the most part we skim through it with ease and do not even give it a second thought but when it comes to the formality of learning mathematics at school, many of us, myself included, freeze up with terror and intimidation.  I cannot even begin to imagine why mathematics scares so many of us but I do know that an effective curriculum with a motivating instructor and an appropriate textbook work wonders.  Unfortunately, textbooks tend to be expensive, particularly those for the sciences and mathematics.  However, buying them used saves a great deal of money.  The following is a list of my preferred sources but please keep in mind that there are many others which are easily found on the Internet:

* Amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com/Mathematics-Sciences-Books/b/ref=tb_bb_math1?ie=UTF8&node=468218&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=browse&pf_rd_r=10ZBZW5PF80F63M9TPET&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=428772601&pf_rd_i=465600) is probably the largest online retailer of, among many other things, used math textbooks.

* Textbooks.com (http://www.textbooks.com/Catalog/M/Math-and-Science.php?CSID=QKA0QQO0MAO0QQDCMOCM2AQKT&hp=02-10LN-Cat-Math) may not be as big as Amazon.com but they do specialize in textbook and thus their textbook selection is more extensive.

* The Back Pack (http://www.thebackpack.com/used_math_textbooks.htm) carry used math textbooks for levels up through high school.

* BookByte.com (http://www.bookbyte.com/browsesubjects.aspx?subjectid=465600) offer college level used math textbooks at amazing prices.

* Powell’s Books (http://www.powells.com/psection/Mathematics.html) stock used math textbooks at all levels of education.

Buy Used Text Books For Sale

Buy Used Text Books For Sale – Textbooks are previously published books that have been designated for educational purposes or books that are written and published specifically for those same purposes.  The first texts ever written and dedicated to education came from ancient Greece but their standardizations of textbooks did not become apparent until the 19th century and the establishment of compulsory primary education in Europe.  The two most historically significant textbooks in the United States were the “New England Primer” that was published in the 17th century and the “McGuffrey Readers” which were published two centuries later, in the 19th.

Regardless of the level of education or the particular branch of study, textbooks are merely tools to enhance, supplement and/or otherwise facilitate learning.  They are required in most private and public educational programs and when chosen well they tend to be greatly beneficial.  Unfortunately, textbooks are very expensive.  As a matter of fact, the prices of textbooks are disproportionately higher than those of other books of equal size, using the same kind of printing ink and paper quality.  The reasons for such seemingly senseless disparities stems from the reality that the textbook market operates on its own very different economic principles and the two most significant of its aspects are:

* Unlike in most other markets, the end users of textbooks are the students and they are not those who choose which textbooks to buy and use.  It is the educating entity (the schools and their faculty or the tutors) who chooses which textbooks to use but they are not the ones who buy them.  With this kind of a system, the price is never factored in when deciding on the product and it therefore gives the producers of the said product, (the textbook publishers) a free hand to drive the prices upwards.
* Textbook publishers have very little competition as the giants have long ago gobbled up the small independent presses and there has been a trend of consolidation and merging.  Today’s textbook market consists of only three significant textbook publishers:  Pearson, Cengage Learning and McGraw-Hill.  With such a deficiency in competition, the three giants are left to set their prices just about as high as they wish.

In spite of all this, there is still a way of saving money on textbooks and that is by purchasing them used, particularly for middle school levels or below.  Why should you pay the high price of a new textbook that will be used for just a few months and then discarded as unwanted refuse? Buying used textbooks for middle school education makes a great deal of sense of a number of levels:

* Purchasing used textbooks for middle school classes or for any other education level can save you seventy five or more percent and that can add up to quite a bit of money.
* It is all about supply and demand — a growing demand for used textbooks will force their producers to reduce prices on their new published textbooks.
* Assuming they are not gravely defaced or missing crucial pages, used textbooks provide the exact same learning benefits.
* The supply of used textbooks is huge and they are easily found at countless websites on the Internet.  You might want to begin your browsing at the following online used textbook vendors:

- Alibris at http://www.alibris.com/books/middle-school-textbooks
- Follett Educational Services at http://www.fes.follett.com/preowned_textbooks_workbooks_k12/used_textbooks_workbooks.cfm.

Used High School Textbooks

Used High School Textbooks – Whether the local, the national or the international economy is weak or strong and whether your personal or organizational budget is high or low, it simply makes more sense to buy used high school textbooks for a variety of very good reasons:

* Helping the Environment.  When one school district buys used high school textbooks, or any other used textbooks for that matter, from another school district that decided to dispose of them in favor of other textbooks, such a transaction translates in the recycling of these textbooks and saving a massive bulk of products from burdening our already overburdened landfills.  The same is true of an individual purchasing the used high school textbook which another individual sold, only on a smaller scale.

* Offsetting Expenses.  Whether it is an individual person, an organization, a certain private or public high school, or an entire school district which sells used high school textbooks, the outcome is the same — the proceeds of such sales make up for the expenses of buying other high school textbooks.  It means that money is coming into the pocket, into the cash register, into the safe deposit box or into the bank.

* Saving Money.  Whichever entity is doing the buying, buying used high school textbooks can save as much as 75 percent.  And that is always money that can be put to other uses.

The Internet is far from lacking online bookstores that will gladly sell used high school textbooks to individual buyers who need a single textbook at a time or to organizations that are ready to purchase hundreds of textbooks.  However, I would first like to introduce you to a few online bookstores which I think you should take a closer look at:

* Academic Book Services (ABS) at http://www.academicbookservices.com/ is a cost conscious, an environmentally aware, a quality mindful and a customer service oriented online bookstore.  They sell their used high school textbooks at savings of up to 75 percent, they send unsold books as donations to overseas schools or to authorized centers for recycling, their customers’ needs come first and they will not settle for used textbooks that are not of the highest quality.

The Academic Book Services was founded more than fifteen years ago and it has since acquired a wealth of experience in the purchasing end as well as the selling end of the used textbook business and it performs these transactions flawlessly.  As such, the Academic Book Services accept pre-orders which most online bookstores are not set up to do, and they fulfill it from their large inventory or go out searching through their extensive used textbook network.

* Biblio.com at http://www.biblio.com/textbooks/ offers their used high school textbooks at 40 percent discounts, on the average.  Biblio.com is an online global marketplace for buying used high school textbooks as well as rare and out-of-print books.  By forming a union of more than 5,500 booksellers from all over the world, Biblio.com has over 50 million used books which have passed their inspection for high quality and are ready to be sold to cost conscious buyers.

* Follett Educational Services (FES) at http://www.fes.follett.com/preowned_textbooks_workbooks_k12/used_textbooks_workbooks.cfm has been in the book business since 1873 and it has one of the largest in-stock inventories of used textbooks at savings of up to 75 percent off the publisher’s net prices.

* Alibris.com at http://www.alibris.com/books/high-school-textbooks was established in 1998 and has since become one of the largest independently owned and operated bookstores on the Internet.

Buy Textbooks Online

Buy Textbooks Online – Knowing where to buy college textbooks is closely related to the understanding of the entire textbook industry; what drives their pricing and how to buy their products (the textbooks) at the very best rates possible.

Supply and demand are big factors which determine prices in all commercial industries of the free world, as they do in the college textbook arena.  However, there are two other factors which drive the prices of college textbooks skyward:

* The first factor is unique to the textbook industry and that is the fact that those who choose the textbooks are not those who have to pay for them.  Stated differently, textbooks are selected by faculty with no consideration for the prices while the prices have to be paid by the students regardless of their capability to pay.  Where does that leave the publishers?  It leaves them free to charge just about whatever they want.
* The second factor is not totally unique to the textbook industry but it is certainly not very common elsewhere and that is the concept of monopoly.  The big publishers have been voraciously gobbling up the small independent presses until only two or three mega giants remain standing and there is no one to get in their way of setting their prices at the heights of their own choosing.

Please do not despair, however.  It is probably true that you will not be able to get the publishers to back off their high prices but you can beat them at their own game by avoiding buying their college textbooks new.  By doing that you will be accomplishing the following:

* You will be reducing the demand which will force the publishers to slow down on their prices hiking.  This is a good deed or the sake of all college students.
* You will be paying less for the college textbooks you need and retain more cash in your pocket.  This is a good for yourself and your personal financing.
* You will be spending money at different venues which will drive the overall growth of the economy because you will be instrumental in spreading the wealth.

Now, we can finally address the main question at hand — Where to buy college textbooks?  Before I respond to this question, I would like to slightly amend it as follows:  Where to buy college textbooks at cheaper rates?  To buy college textbooks at cheaper rates you should:

* start your shopping as early as possible and beat the crowds;
* as mentioned above, never buy them new;
* never buy them from the campus bookstore because they will charge you for the convenience.  But browsing is for free;
* check their availability and prices in local bookstores; but
* online vendors of college textbooks are the venues where you are likely to get the lowest prices and find the largest selections.

To buy your college textbooks, connect to the World Wide Web and begin by looking through the following selection online used college textbook sellers:
