Used Spanish Text Books – The concept of a foreign language can be defined on several levels:
* First of all, a foreign language is a language that is not used by certain people living in a specific region of the world. A good example is the Portuguese language to most people living in Thailand who perceive it as a foreign language.
* Secondly, a foreign language is a language that is strange and unfamiliar to a particular individual living in the region where the said language is spoken regularly by the local inhabitants. For instance, the French language is used by most people living in Paris but it is a foreign language to a newly settled immigrant from a different country such as Poland or Russia or Canada.
* Thirdly, a foreign language is the language that is not used by the majority of the population in a said region although it may be the mother tongue of a particular individual who was born and raised there. This scenario can be clearly demonstrated as follows – a child who was born and raised in Turkey learned English from his British mother and Farsi from his Iranian father. Both, English and Farsi are considered that child’s mother tongues because he learned them from birth yet they are also foreign languages in Turkey and to most of its citizens.
Beginning with primary schools and continuing through secondary and higher education, most schools in the developed as well as the developing nations teach their students at least one foreign language. The choice of which foreign language is to be taught depends on geographic proximity to a neighboring nation whose language is foreign, on local or national political persuasions and sympathies, on their internal demographics, on their global commerce and so on. In a report issued in 1995, the European Commission called attention to the importance of teaching young pupils at least two foreign languages and the Lisbon Summit of 2000 named the study of foreign languages as one of the five most critical skills.
Numerous studies conducted primarily in the United Kingdom and the United States show that mastering a second language is beneficial on a variety of levels as it increases earning capability in the workforce while opening up more opportunities and a wider range of career paths; it broadens interpersonal communications with many more people around the world; it physically changes the brain’s grey matter by making it denser to increase its processing capability for improved thinking, strategizing and solving mathematical problems as well as expanding learning power and creativity. There is one critical point that is evident in the results of all these studies and that is the fact that the most pronounced improvements are evident in those who begin studying a foreign language in their early years. However, those who take up a foreign language later in life still reap tremendous benefits.
If Spanish is the foreign language of your choice, it makes little difference whether you are a preteen or a mature adult as you will still need to use Spanish textbooks.
